CLOSING THEME/FUNDING CREDITS

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This week’s edition of CLASSICAL GUITAR ALIVE! features music by three French composers (Marais, Satie, and Arnaud Dumond) and more, with works by Mozart, Ponce, Kangro, and Dusan Bogdanovic.

The program begins with the debut CD by the Tantalus Guitar Quartet, their arrangement of the Overture from Mozart’s opera “Don Giovanni.”  Performing music of one of Mexico’s greatest composers, Manuel Ponce, is one of Mexico’s rising stars: Pablo Garibay. Winner of the 2006 JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition, he also won 2nd prize in the 2008 Guitar Foundation of America Solo Guitar Competition.

“The Vanishing Snow” is from a larger work titled “Spring Imaginations” by  Estonian composer Raimo Kangro (1949-2001). The piece is scored for the unusual ensemble of violin, vibraphone, and guitar.

Born in the former Yugoslavia, guitarist-composer Dusan Bogdanovic’s balled “Castles of the White City” is performed by Richard Patterson.

The music of French Baroque composer/bass viol virtuoso Marin Marais (1656-1728) is arranged for viola and guitar by the Alma Duo’s Phyllis Kamrin and Michael Goldberg.

Often noted for his unusual titles to his works, French composer Erik Satie’s (1866-1925) “Three Pieces in the Form of a Pear” is actually comprised of six pieces. Four of these are performed here by the Trio de Cologne’s Laura Young, Zoran Dukic, and Pablo Marquez.

The program concludes with contemporary French guitarist-composer Arnaud Dumond’s “Sonnerie.” The composer describes the work as a long journey through the labyrinth of night to light…  …with the transformation of the guitar into a bell.”
